Chess Set

Honour for biomaterials pioneer

June 15th, 2008 by ribhsbtblog6395

Professor Robert Langer, one of the most prolific inventors in medicine, wins the Millennium Technology Prize.

With the abundance of options in chess sets, it is easy to become overwhelmed, especially at the delicate pricing point. This article will point out the reasons for price variation on chess sets, for a given l. Of course such choices as size of the chess pieces, the length of the chess board, or thickness will have an overall effect on the price. This article focuses on the relative differences when all such things are held equal.

The first thing that will dictate the price of the chess set is choice of the materials that are used in its production. The most popular options include Metal and Wood. Additionally there are several woods that are available and each will influence the price of the chess set.

Chess pieces that are made from metal are going to be the most expensive, while chess pieces that are made from wood are less expensive, in some cases extraordinarily so. Metal chess pieces are more expensive because of the extra equipment that is needed. The hardness of the metal that are used will force replacement of equipment due to wear faster than wood. Additionally, mining the ore needed for metal is usually more expensive than that of obtaining wood.

Even with choosing wood chess sets, there will lie a large price variation in pricing amongst the possible woods. Sheesham wood, Rosewood and Ebony are the three most popular choices for chess sets. This also their order of increasing cost. Sheesham is a lighter colored brown. It is an excellent choice for chess pieces, with its ability to be carved. Identical sheesham set can be up to 50% less that Rosewood set and 70% less that Ebony. Sheesham pieces are just as beautiful as their counter part, with a warm traditional feel to them.

Rosewood chess sets are then next on the ladder. Rosewood is a darker wood with even darker grain running through it. It is also a harder wood and more difficult to procure. As such, the skill needed to work with rosewood drives the cost higher. The wood varies in color from a Brown to a very deep coffee color, and can be found to have red hints throughout. As such, this wood produces a rich chess set that is a beautiful centerpiece to any chess collection.

Finally there is Ebony. When a player is looking to make a statement in a room or in a match, this is certainly the choice to make. Ebony is a dense hardwood that is difficult to find. The wood will vary in color from dark purple to deep black. Carved, it is a very impressive as chess pieces. Because of how hard it is, creating chess pieces from ebony is something that left to the most skilled of the trade. That, coupled with its rarity and demand causes the ebony chess sets to rise in price. The result is a severe and well heeled chess set.

With all the chess set that are available for purchase, this article was able to provide the guidelines explaining the source of the costs in a chess set. While there is a large range of the prices to choose amongst, a chess set is an investment that will return hours of joy and satisfaction to anyone who empowers them selves to own one.

Downing Street says there is “still more to do” for the government to win its crunch vote on 42-day detention.

Let’s face it - currency isn’t green anymore. Currency is a slab of rectangular plastic decorated in goldfish, landscapes, paintings or whatever — sporting a magical black strip on the rear side. Plastic is convenient, but dangerous. However, there are instances when credit cards can prove to be necessary. Emergencies, delayed paydays, holidays — all can be aided with a good credit card.

So which ones are the good ones? How can you tell when a credit card offer will live up to the hype that it’s envelope screams at you? The biggest thing to look at is the APR. People used to think that the greater the number of benefits offered by a credit card — the better the credit card. This is simply not the case. When it comes down to it, the best benefit out there is to have low to zero finance charges and interest. A 0% APR credit card provides this benefit. So do credit card companies actually offer 0% APR?

When you receive a credit card offer in the mail, the first thing you should look for is the APR. Likely, it will be printed in bold and set in a huge font. The offer may read 0% annual percentage rate or APR — but look closer. Often the 0% offer is simply a lure to hook consumers and will only last about six months, and then the APR shoots up. Whether the credit card shoots up a lot or a little should be the determining factor on whether or not to sign up for the offered credit card.

Sometimes, even short-term 0% cards can be very helpful. In many instances, 0% APR is attractive to people who need to transfer a balance from a high interest card. Debt consolidation is a smart and common practice to help higher credit scores and manage debt effectively.

It’s hard to find negatives in 0% credit cards, but they can prove to be less beneficial for some. For those who pay off there credit cards every month, and do not have to worry about carrying a balance — a rewards card is the way to go.

All in all, there are three options. One, choose a credit card with the lowest APR possible. Two, go for the card that offers the best rewards — as long as you pay it off every month. Or three, just avoid added debt — because the absence of a credit card always will carry 0% APR.

DJ died after drugs and bondage

June 5th, 2008 by ribhsbtblog6395

Former Radio 1 Breakfast DJ Kevin Greening died after taking part in a gay bondage session, an inquest hears.

Crossovers! What are they? Why do I even need them? Can’t I do without them?

If these are your questions, here are my answers . . .

Crossovers are processors that separate sound frequency bands. Now let me speak in every day English . . .

Imagine your audio signal is like traffic. There are pedestrains, bicycles, motorcycles, small cars, minivans, buses, lorries and trailers. Now if we assume that there is a lane that has been specifically designed for pedestrains, another specifically for kids riding their bikes, another for bikers and small cars, another for minivans and vans, and finally, another for big buses, lorries and trailers.

Now imagine a chaotic situation where anyone can use any lane they choose and imagine what happens when a lorry decides to use the pedestrains’ lane. Do you get the picture?

A crossover is a piece of equipment (either standalone or included in other units) that acts like a traffic warden and ensures those audio “lorries” use the lane (speakers) designed specifically for them.

So why do you need stuff like that? Pretty clear now: to restore order and get the best from your audio setup. Just as the durability of the lanes will also be enhanced by having the right traffic on it, so your speakers will last a lot longer if they handle the sound frequency range they were designed for.

Can you do without them? Yes, just as you can do with the chaotic situation in my example — Negligible if you don’t have too much diversity and traffic but terrible if you have diversity and heavy traffic. Furthermore, you really do compromise your audio experience and also put unnecessary stress on certain speakers.

And lastly, no matter how much you invest in an audio system, the quality of your speakers (which also includes everything that enhances their performance) is the greatest factor in the overall quality of your car audio (or any audio system, for that matter!)

Imperial may set own entry test

June 4th, 2008 by ribhsbtblog6395

The head of Imperial College London says it is trying out an entrance exam.

Finding a car stereo for your car is not hard but finding the right one at a reasonable price is not such an easy job. It needs a lot of research and trials. First of all you need to be well versed with all the brands by browsing the net or do your homework simply by conducting a thorough research on this matter. One of the best ways to get an inexpensive car stereo system is by conversing with your friends who owns a good car stereo system that reproduces quality sound just what you need. If you find it is economical to you then you can opt for it.

Your car stereo system need not be an expensive one. Some people get hooked on the fact that expensive car stereos would sound much better than an inexpensive car stereo. But that thought is wrong, remember there is a saying - a little knowledge is dangerous. Therefore, it is important that you have the basic idea with the car stereo system. Inexpensive car stereos can sound just as better as the expensive ones if you know how to get the right car stereo parts. Especially the speakers. Expensive car stereos may only have extra unnecessary features that you would not require at all.

You have to make a decision and keep in mind what you really want and what you can live without. For example you may not need twenty presets radio buttons where you can live with only six. Make sure that you do not opt for stereos, which have the extra features that you may not need. The more the gadgets, the higher the costs of the car stereo will be.

The best way to get a good and inexpensive car stereos is by talking to the clerks asking for opinions regarding different kinds of stereos. And when you do so make sure you ask if they are authorized dealer of the product that they recommend. Check with the warranty and if your stereo needs to be repaired, whether you can take it back to the store to fix it.

Sometimes second hand car stereos may not seem like a bad idea. As the growth of technology is really high and the invention and developments of products on newer models so also the old ones becomes outdated just as early as the new ones. Therefore here you should take full advantage of the situation when some people sell off the outdated car stereo to replace it with the newer version. This is another tip on how to get an inexpensive car stereo.

The speakers are also the most vital part of a car stereo. An inexpensive car stereo can sound just as good as the expensive car stereo if you have good set of speakers. Taking the guidance of the sales people will surely not disappoint you. Make sure you do not get fooled by buying some other product that would not match your stereo type Therefore, you need to listen to each speaker from every brand and compare them.

Time, please

Aussies do, Danes don’t. Should the UK stop drinking in public?

Search engine marketing or SEO is a known term in the internet world these days, but SMO or social media optimization is a comparatively newer term. SMO is a bifurcation of the SEO services, but unfortunately not many business owners, know how to use it in order to increase their search popularity.

Where Search Engine Optimization works on search engines the social media optimization works on social media sites. The social media sites are not exactly focused on businesses, but are more into social interaction. Some examples of social media optimization sites are blogs, forums, podcasts, video sites and community based websites.

The Search Engine Optimization websites, do not really aim at replacing Search Engine Optimization, instead, they only tend to compliment the functionality of SEO services. While SEO provides long term ranking to the websites, the SMOs are famous to create a viral buzz to a business, particularly to a small business. They are like gossip mongers who spread news about your website like wild fire. This helps in building in curiosity and attracting visitors to your website.

The drawback of social media optimization (SMO) lies in the fact that the buzz that they create fades away too soon. News is news till no one has heard about it, but once people are aware of it, it is of no use, where as the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has a higher stand here for the simple reason that they are permanent and effective too.

Experts believe that both SMO and SEO are partners that compliment each other. A great way to use them is to link the website to some of the SEO quality content pages every time the social media sites name the website. This proves that content is an essential part of both SEO and SMO techniques.

There are various content rich websites that work as social media sites. One such social media site is Yahoo! Answers that not only answer various queries raised by the end users but they also indirectly promote the websites.

Though social media optimization is helpful in website promotion and visibility, it will never be able to take the position Search Engine Optimization occupies. SEO is much higher in results and efficiency than any other website optimization.

Speight’s father talks of grief

June 1st, 2008 by ribhsbtblog6395

The father of late children’s presenter Mark Speight talks for the first time about his grief for his son.

Being a business takes a lot of hard work, to put it mildly. Artists generally have experience in creating beauty, but are usually less than knowledgeable about the world of business and self-employment. It pays to work hard, to avoid that horrible starving artist cliche. Who needs to starve? By spending a lot of time building a reputation and trust in clients, the business will grow all by itself. The trick is to think like a savvy businessperson, not a fine artist.

First of all, advertising is very important. Without it, nobody knows who you are and what you have to sell. Learn how to sell, read, and absorb as much marketing knowledge as possible. The internet is a wealth of information. Focus your study on basic business building and marketing concepts, and then grow that knowledge by adding more study on it, later.

Join many clubs and organizations. Think like a business not a hobby. Don’t go crazy with fees and big titles. Just get your name out there, and do it as cheaply as possible. Word travels fast if you’re good and have products that people like.

Be realistic. Don’t expect to take over the marketing world overnight. Build on your knowledge. It may take years but that’s ok, it’s to be expected unless you have an unlimited marketing budget or an MBA to move ahead quicker.

Be professional. Copyright everything. Keep up with the legal side of everything. It pays to be professional and expect nothing but professionalism back from others you deal with. Customers will try to get something for nothing. Don’t take it personally but don’t cave in, be firm with what you think your items are worth, document everything and believe in yourself. Don’t let others control your business decisions unless you hire them to do so.

Put out a quality product. That goes without saying. Lousy product, no repeat customers, and your reputation suffers. Craftsmanship and professionalism. Don’t be late in delivering items, dress appropriately when meeting clients and be businesslike. Sloppy presentations will put you at a disadvantage. To stand out you must be a class act and so must your products.

Network, network, network. Attend functions, luncheons, fairs, whatever fits your niche in the world. Get to know others. Big executives do their networking on golf courses. You can network yourself anywhere. Keep business cards on hand and pass them out, don’t be shy.

Be picky about assignments. Don’t accept anything that comes along. This keeps your standard of work high and uncompromised. It’s good to get exposure but don’t give your work away to anyone who asks for it. If you do, you’ll be inundated with those who will tell you “I don’t have any money, but I can give you exposure if you just do ___ for me”. Nope. Get exposure on your own. You can bog yourself down with these kinds of projects and make nothing from it. If you want to donate work then be discriminating about it.

Have a budget and stick to it. Don’t get extravagant with spending or you’ll end up broke. The income of a freelance artist can be a windfall of cash one minute, and absolutely nothing, the next. Work towards more steady income without wild peaks and valleys. It pays to be sensible with money. Save a little whenever possible, to be used for strictly business purposes in the future. It takes practise.

Paying for a separate studio is great if you’re independently wealthy, if you aren’t, having one room of your living space for your art is best. It pays off not to have an extra rent to pay for. It’s all about the profit at the end of each month.

Promote others, and they will in turn promote you. Spread the word about yourself and others, and it’s amazing how fast good news travels.

If you aren’t fully self-supporting, get a side job. It’s part of paying your dues. Learn from any part-time job you have, try to get something that will teach you something about marketing, art or whatever your business is about.

The key is persistence, discipline and never to stop learning. If you’re an artist, it’s fun to do art you like doing, but also keep in mind, if you plan to sell what you do, you must appeal to your audience. Who is your audience? Target your work to them. You can still be yourself, you still call the shots. In art, whatever you do is your right. Artistic license. To be successful it is important to balance your uniqueness with being appealing to your customers. Make it work for you.

Call for debate on NHS donations

May 26th, 2008 by ribhsbtblog6395

Guidelines on donations of health equipment should be clarified after concerns of a two-tier NHS, an MSP urges.

Inside this book, sixty writers who have turned sixty offer sixty recommendations for living an exciting, enthusiastic life after the age of sixty. Plenty of important people from M.D’s to writers and money managers offer advice in many areas of life, while the sixty plus folks gear up to rediscover themselves. Moreover, the royalties from the sale of the book is donated to various nonprofit organizations; just the thing for the baby boomers to do.

In the introduction, president and publisher Ronnie Sellers writes, ” There was no way that anyone over sixty could ever understand anything about our generation because there had never been a generation as special as ours. And we’re still special. And that’s why we’re younger at sixty than anyone has ever been before…and better looking, too.

The book is divided into nine sections. Section one takes the boomers to their roots of recreating involvement in collective concepts. In this section, while a novelist advises people to take off their clothes, another writer talks against a positive outlook, saying righteous anger and stubbornness will give the people the power to carry on. An artist, too, is for a rebellious nature and revival of the 60’s activism. Then, a printer company owner asks people to follow their passions, while a copywriter is after making a difference. An interesting advice of humility comes from a psychologist, and a holistic health M.D. invites people to let go of unpleasant memories.

Section two is about beliefs, beliefs from ghosts to being a saint, to prayer, to finding one’s own island, to reflecting on things, and to experiencing life. Section three is good vibrations involving art, humor, yoga, affirmations, meditation, being inspired with passion for life, and falling in love again.

Section four is about learning, re-learning, exercising, encouraging one’s curiosity, starting new things, making commitments, volunteerism, and discovering what really matters. Section five is all about money: making it, using it wisely, handling insurances, and strategizing one’s finances.

Section six addresses the physical and mental health, from skin rejuvenations to handling diseases and stress. Section seven concerns the rediscovery of self from running a marathon to learning kaizen. Section eight is on sex and love after sixty, while section nine is about enjoying grandchildren, taking an interest in other people and the world, and traveling.

With sixty writers in one book, the editors deserve immense praise. Andrea Feld is the general editor with many editing successes to her name from editing books to contributing essays to important publications. Of the three commissioning editors, Sheri Bell-Rehwoldt is freelance writer with many journalistic achievements. Joy Darlington is a journalist, novelist, and editor, and Bruce Fraser is a financial writer and editor.

Sixty Things to Do When You Turn Sixty from Sellers Publishing, Inc. is 360 pages in paperback with ISBN-10: 1569069670 and ISBN-13: 978-1569069677.

I recommend this book to anyone who expects to turn sixty sooner or later, because not only the pieces in it are informative and thought-provoking, but also they encourage, inspire, and entertain with a sense of humor.

China condemns Dalai Lama meeting

May 25th, 2008 by ribhsbtblog6395

China has criticised Gordon Brown for taking part in talks with Tibet’s exiled leader, the Dalai Lama.

If your readers don’t care about your characters, you’re sunk. Readers don’t necessarily have to like all of your characters, but they have to care about what happens to your main character, or there’s no reason for them to keep reading.

Which means you have to care about your characters, and you have to know them, maybe even better than you know yourself. To create characters that live and breathe on the page, you must first create characters that live in breathe in your psyche. This is why you need to know much more about them than you’ll ever have to include in your completed story.

One way to achieve this authentic character history is to put your main character(s) in as many real-life situations as possible. And because thinking is only the first stage and can only get you so far, write these situations out, considering all sorts of details.

When you can imagine your character in different places and with different people, beyond people and places your story requires, you make your fictional people exponentially more realistic within the confines of your own story.

Start by deciding on the basics: your main character’s date of birth and favorite things (such as food, color, activity, place, song, movie, book, friend, family member, possession, game, animal/pet, amusement park ride, season). Remember: these are details you’ll want to work out, even though they may never need to be discussed in your story.

The basics is great place to start, but to create the most vivid, memorable characters, you’ll need to stretch your imagination and go beyond the basics.

The following exercises will get you started in developing rich, believable, interesting characters. Choose the exercises you’re most drawn to, and really let yourself go-don’t worry about polished sentences or grammar or mechanics. (You can’t plumb the depths of your imagination when you’re worried about comma placement.)

STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: List emotional, intellectual, and physical strengths and weaknesses for your character. Include any special talents or aptitudes. Get your hands on an IQ test and take it from your character’s perspective, not yours. (Tricky, but fun and worthwhile.)

DINNER AT OUR HOUSE: Imagine a family meal at your main character’s dinner table. Write a short descriptive scene revealing the average evening meal at your main character’s house.

Now revisit that meal scene and add tension. (After all, tension makes fiction go ’round.) Perhaps the school principal called Mom that afternoon and therefore Mom has some serious lecturing to do (or some serious disappointment to relate). Or maybe Dad lost his job that day and — over meatloaf and green beans — tells the family that they’ll have to be uprooted (again). Perhaps the teen daughter brings home a dinner date who only Mom (an undercover detective) recognizes as a convicted felon.

The point is: think of an emotionally-charged piece of information that will make this meal very different from the one above. Write this scene, paying attention to specifics.

WHAT WOULD S/HE DO? Imagine an ethical dilemma that your character finds himself/herself in. Maybe your character was offered a job promotion or a large bonus based on a task s/he didn’t carry out alone. Does s/he tell the truth and share the credit with the colleague or keep quiet about it and bask in the glory solo? Choose a moral quandary, plunk your character it in, and write a short, thorough, descriptive scene. Be sure to tap into your character’s thoughts, fears, conflicts, and ultimately how s/he arrived at the final decision.

DEAR DIARY: Write three diary/journal entries from your main character’s point of view, fully in his/her voice and in his/her head. Make the entries occur on different days and have them deal with different events and emotions. Try to include a whole range of feelings-joy, sorrow, rage, uncertainty, anxiety, to name a few.

DOCTOR, DOCTOR: Write up your character’s last physical exam report, as it would be written by the family physician. Include all relevant details, along with any physical complaints the character might mention.

Then write up some clinical notes from a psychologist who has been seeing your character in therapy. Perhaps your character has discussed his/her worst fear with the doctor. Reveal as much background to that fear as you can: when and why it began, how it’s manifested, how your character struggles to cope with it.

DEAR AUTHOR: Your character writes you (the author) a letter, instructing you quite specifically in how s/he wants to be portrayed in the book. Make your character’s personality come through loud and clear in this letter. Try to set yourself aside as you write it.

JOB APPLICATION: Get your hands on a job application (or create one of your own), and fill it out from your character’s point of view. Include work history, schooling, references, as well as the character’s statement explaining why s/he would be perfect for the job.

Always remember to have fun with these. The minute you’re not having fun, stop. The looser and more relaxed you are when you try these exercises, the more you’ll get from them. You’ll discover things about your character you never thought you knew, which translates to a more fully realized, believable person alive in your story.

A controversial new “right to die” card is being offered to the public that allows anyone to refuse treatment in a medical emergency. Who carries it, and why?

In this current time of abuse scandals involving Catholic priests, it might not occur to some that accusations toward men of the cloth are not a recent development. The 1846 case of Father Roman Weinzoepfel illustrates this point, and Roman: Unparalled Outrage offers fictional account of the events of this young priest’s tragic life.

Though the Catholic population of the American midwest was small, the need for a community’s spiritual guidance outweighed the necessity of some priests’ complete training. Thus, Father Weinzoepfel’s installation as pastor of a small Catholic church in Evansville, Indiana was expedited, and this Alsatian found himself quickly having to adjust to pre-Civil War America in a time when immigrants (particularly the Irish and Germanic Catholics) were looked upon with suspicion. It is a discrimination Father Weinzoepfel feels immediately among various merchants (a scene depicting the newspaper editor’s determination that a Catholic festival is not newsworthy sticks out).

Nonetheless, the priest finds acceptance among his own flock, and comes to be acquainted with the Long family, to whom Father administers the dying matriarch Last Rites. The father, Louis, appears to be devout yet is an overbearing patriarch, particularly when it comes to his wayward daughter, Anna. When Anna shocks the family by marrying outside the Faith, the priest tries to make the situation bearable by ensuring the future Catholicity of Anna’s children. However, it is Anna who makes the situation unbearable for Father Weinzoepfel when she, distraught that he has refused her advances, accuses him of rape. Unparalled Outrage takes the reader through a fictional account of the trial, the ensuing anti-Catholic sentiment that plagued the town, and Father Weinzoepfel’s fate, the outcome of which might have differed had he given in to the temptation to break the seal of the confessional.

Author McMullen offers with Roman: Unparalled Outrage an interesting historical perspective on religious intolerance in early America, a timely read despite its setting. Long, awkward stretches in the narrative, coupled with constant shifting of time (as much of Roman’s story is told in flashback), however, interrupt the otherwise smooth flow of the story.
