Cancer: The facts

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

The disease tends to affect older people - but can strike at any time.

Whenever new, amazing, and mysterious technology appears in the world, a new body of knowledge also appears to explain how it works. This information comes from well-meaning experts, early adopters of the new technology, marketers who are trying to sell the new technology, and many other sources. Without fail, some bogus information appears alongside the correct information and forms the foundation of some dubious “consumer tips”.

The conventional wisdom behind HDTV tech, magic as it is, includes several of these logical but misguided tips. One goes like this: plasma HDTV sets contain a strange substance inside the screen, called “plasma”, which is so slippery and sneaky that it could leak out of the set if you lay it flat on the floor or in the back of your car. This reasoning supposedly explains why many retailers have a strict policy against shipping a plasma TV any way except vertically. Some customers have even elected to choose an LCD over a plasma because the back of their car wasn’t tall enough to take it away from the store standing up vertically.

The real reason behind that policy is that a plasma TV has a relatively fragile construction, with two panes of glass mounted very close to each other. If one was resting horizontally in the back of a truck, and that truck bounced over a speed bump a little too fast, the panes could bounce a little themselves and squeeze what’s in between.

What’s in between is not a pool of mysterious liquid, but an array of tiny cells that contain a special kind of gas. When the computer inside the TV tells them to, these cells light up like tiny neon lights, because the gas inside them is excited into what’s called a “plasma state”. If some of these cells get damaged by transport, there’s really no way to fix them. Laying a plasma TV carefully down on your living room floor, however, won’t do any harm at all. Just don’t step on it.

Plasma HDTV sets do require a little more careful treatment than LCD sets, but many people think the exceptional picture and the affordability of a high-end plasma is worth the trouble. To learn more about the differences between the popular HDTV formats, refer to this simple guide: Plasma, LCD, DLP.

The sloth’s popular image as a lazy creature that sleeps for most of the day has been called into question.

OK, say you’ve got one thousand of your favorite MP3 songs sitting in your hard disk. What’s the best way to enjoy those files? Most of us probably will use the Windows Media Player to listen to those files. but did you know there are other more innovative and interesting ways playback MP3, WMA and WAV files?

Let’s take a look at the five methods.

Use MusicMatch Jukebox

If you think most that most PC programs for playing digital music look like the built-in Windows Media Player, think again. There are programs out there that go far beyond the Windows Media Player in functionality. One great example is Musicmatch Jukebox from Musicmatch. Musicmatch Jukebox is quite simply the world’s best digital music player. It supports playback of various music formats like audio CDs, MP3s, Internet streams, WMAs, WAV files and more. You also get CD burning, music ripping and music organizing capabilities. The Plus version even allows you to automatically tag your music files with detailed info and album art!

Use a Portable MP3 Player

Portable music players like the Apple iPod, Creative Nomad and Rio Nitrus have taken the market by storm. You don’t have to be confined to your desktop PC or laptop to listen to digital music! The portable music players can allow you to take your music anywhere. The compact size of MP3 and WMA music formats means that you can literally take a jukebox of thousands of songs whereever you go! You may also want to check out my review of the top 5 portable music players here. There are also other portable music options, including handphones with MP3 support.

Use a PDA

The latest Pocket PC or Palm-based personal digital assistants (PDAs) can also act as music players. Pop in a large memory card (e.g. 64 MB) and you can store many MP3 or WMA files. Then hook up a headphone, launch the music software in the PDA and you’re good to go! I personally own a HP iPaq 2210 which effectively keeps track of my appointments and doubles up as a music player.

Use Your Car Stereo

This is my favorite way of listening to my MP3 collection. I recently bought a car stereo that can playback native MP3 songs. This means that I can pop in a data CD containing hundreds of MP3 files and the car stereo will play them! This does not work on conventional car stereos. If you own a conventional car stereo, but still want to listen to your MP3 songs, one way is to create an audio CD from your music files first. The car stereo will then have no problem interpreting and playing back the audio CD. Of course, in this case, you’ll be limited to about 14 to 17 tracks of music only.

Use Your Home Stereo

If you’re a music lover, you probably already have a home stereo. Use it to listen to your MP3 music files! However, take note that Like car stereos, conventional home stereos will not be able to play back native MP3 songs. You will need a newer home stereo set with MP3 playback capability. New models from Kenwood, Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony usually have MP3 support.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many ways to enjoy that digital music collection of yours. My favorite methods of listening to digital audio files is via a portable music player or the car stereo. Of course, you may have your own preference - some people like to listen to music off their desktop PC or laptop. Decide which method(s) is suitable for you and go for it!

Teen mums concern in NI

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Cases of sexually-transmitted diseases among young people have risen sharply, according to new figures.

We’re on the Road in the 2008, Mazda CX-7

The Good: Nice styling, good handling, decent list of standard features, good curbside appeal, very safe.

The Bad: Road noise is somewhat pronounced, rear seats are low.

Overall: The CX-7 is a sharp looking small SUV, sporty styling while offering a well designed, handsome and functional interior.

The CX-7 is Mazda’s five passenger crossover sport-utility vehicle, initially introduced for 2007. The powertrain consists of a 2.3 Liter 4 cylinder turbo engine, outputting 244 horsepower and 258 lb foot of torque, coupled to the front wheel drive, six speed automatic transmission with sportshift! Mazda offers the CX-7 in three trim levels: Sport; Touring; and Grand Touring.

The CX-7 is very sporty, from the five-pointed grille and prominent front fender, up to the A pillar slanting at a 66 degree angle, the Mazda holds true to “the soul of a sports car” slogan. The integrated rounded xenon headlights round out the front corner of the vehicle nicely! It’s retains the sharp handling and responsiveness of a car, while offering light duty utility as well.

Safety

The CX-7 scored best marks in Government Front, Driver and passenger, side driver/ rear passenger test as well as good marks in government rollover tests. The 5 passenger SUV has many standard safety features, including: ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, as well as Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control System. Also standard find side impact door beams, Front/Rear crumple zones, an anti-theft immobilizer and TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), four wheel ventilated disc brakes; Front wheel or Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive. The CX-7 has thick D pillars, but the area is very visible using the side mirrors. This Mazda also features a good compliment of six airbags for front and back.

Driving Impressions

The CX-7 is a handles well and although you might expect a v-6 to be necessary for this size vehicle, you’d be surprised how well the 4 cylinder turbo performs. Unlike the turbo of the past there’s almost zero lag. The turbo does a great job of compensating for what could otherwise be a lighter duty engine for this rather hefty vehicle. Handling is solid, responsive and tight (without being numb) and thanks to the four wheel independent suspension you’ll feel little road, the response is direct. Road noise is a bit more audible than others, but it’s not enough to be troublesome. Consumer Reports rated Mazda’s CX-7 as less than average for first year reliability, but we did not note any potential issues during our test drive.

The Way You Feel Inside

Jump into the CX-7 without needing a boost, it’s not a huge SUV. Mazda’s red and blue lighting combine for a pleasing hue across the clean and simple analogue gauge cluster. Interior styling is handsome and build quality is good, inline with the category.

Function meet form, form meet function: nice looking front/side defrost vents are smartly integrated into the dash, which is stacked to include a centered LCD display, for clock and audio info. Discover a large lockable center console, large enough for a music junkie’s CD collection, and more space for snacks. Got power? Plug in to either of the 12v power outlets. Drivers will also appreciate lighting accents that make it easy to see the interior while driving at night, thanks to the indirect blue cabin illumination (on the upper trim). Drivers and passengers delight with lumbar adjustment on front seats, that are also heated (love the heated seats, also on upper trim).

The CX-7 has a good long list of standard features, they include: Cruise Control, AM/FM/CD audio with automatic level control (automatically adjusting the volume (smooth and non intrusive) based on noise levels) fold away brake pedal assembly, LATCH rear child safety seat anchors and tethers, A/C, power door locks, plus more. The CX-7 offers fun, a sporty drive and a bit of utility as well, and gives you alot for your money!

Stowage

For a five passenger SUV, you’ll likely be taking the weekend road trip and the CX-7 is ready for the road, with decent and versatile stowage space. Fold the rear seats down (although they don’t lay entirely flat, check the photo below) and you’ll have 58.6 cubic feet. With the rear seats up find 29.9 cubic feet about average for this class vehicle, and decent space for the weekend warrior or occasional camper. Options exist to extend your storage with a roof rack (100lbs max); and the tow package (towing capacity up to 2000 lbs).

By the Numbers

By the new 2008 fuel rating the FWD CX-7 is rated at 17 city / 22 highway, and we averaged 17.8 MPG on premium fuel, combined (city and highway) driving. (AWD model gets 16 / 21MPG)

Mazda CX-7 Sticker Price

FWD Sport Trim starts at $23,750.

FWD Touring Trim starts at $25,500. and

FWD Grand Touring starts at $26,300.

AWD Sport Trim starts at $24,450.

AWD Touring Trim starts at $27,200.

AWD Grand Touring Trim starts at $28,000

Fairport anger over festival cash

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Musicians who played at the Isle of Wight’s Folk and Blues festival last September claim they have still not been paid for performing.

When one owns an established business, they may feel that they do not need to work too hard in order to keep their business afloat. However, especially with a business that has been around for quite some time, making sure that your company keeps up with the times can mean the continued success of your company. In many cases, this means that you may need to expand your business to include a website. When you create your website, you will need to utilize Houston search engine optimization or SEO.

Since you have already established your business and made it successful without using Houston SEO, you may wonder why you would even need to bother. With so many people turning to the internet to find what they are looking for, a business that does not have a website may find that they will slowly begin to lose new business to those that do have websites. You may still maintain your “regulars” but any new customers will likely go elsewhere. Houston search engine optimization can help keep the new customers coming.

Owning an established business may leave you very little time to work on making a website that utilizes Houston SEO. Therefore, you may choose to ignore the need for Houston search engine optimization. Because you will still maintain your current level of customers, you may not even notice the effects. However, if you make the extra time to make sure your website is competitive, you may find that Houston SEO expands your business faster than you could have ever imagined.

A website can really help an already established business continue to soar and grow. The proper use of can make a big difference in your customer base, bringing in many more customers that otherwise may have gone with one of your biggest competitors.

‘Concern’ over referendum shift

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Lib Dems and Tories voice concern over Wendy Alexander’s shift on a referendum on independence.

Finding a suitable search engine optimisation job is not an easy matter. Most companies will use somebody in house who knows a bit about search optimisation and who can pick the rest up either online or through a short professional development course. There are companies who advertise for SEO executives but they are few and far between.

Search engine optimisation is still a bit of a mystery for many companies and so their web page sits there, it may bring them the occasional query, but by and large business goes on much as before - as if the internet had not really happened. When they do wake up to the fact that they need somebody to make their website viable, they will usually hire a contractor.

A great deal of SEO work is contracted out. Companies are set up to offer SEO services but these services are usually outsourced to freelancers - hence the constantly growing demand for web content writers who have some understanding of how the search engines work. If a company wants more than optimised content, then they will probably hire someone to do the work. Rarely do companies employ somebody just to undertake search engine optimisation on a long term or permanent basis. Most advertisements requiring SEO want it on a consultancy or contract basis - i.e. they don’t want to put you on their payroll, they just want to get someone in, pay for the service and leave it at that.

Most SEO ‘companies’ who advertise their services online are usually just a couple of people working together. These SEO experts will help an individual or a company set up their website so that it is search engine friendly - most of them would rather be involved with setting up the website at the beginning so that it has the right meta tags and the keywords reflect the meta tags, and the content reflects the keywords. Once all this is done and the website is submitted to the search engines, online directories, and where pertinent social book marking sites, the SEO job is done. The company will either write their content in house or outsource it to web content writers.

Finding a suitable search engine optimisation job as you can see from the above is not a simple process if what you want is a steady job with an annual salary. Most SEO experts operate on a freelance basis advertising their services. You are more likely to see advertisements offering to undertake search engine optimisation than you are to see job offers in this area.

Proper search engine optimisation involves a number of different tasks many of which only need to be done once, under these circumstances most individuals or companies would prefer to pay someone a flat rate for a one off service. This is a much cheaper way of doing things than having someone on the payroll all the time.

SEO companies are beginning to emerge, rather than advertise for an SEO executive they will advertise for a specific part of the process, setting up sites, site submission, posting, writing optimised content, redesign sites so that they are optimised. Finding a suitable search engine optimisation job under these circumstances means having some knowledge of how advertisements for these jobs might be worded. So you have the option of advertising your services and being paid on a contract basis, or looking out for advertisements that relate to the areas mentioned in this paragraph and applying for those.

A little dash of panic

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

American public information films weren’t like the British ones. They were scary, for starters.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles
by Agatha Christie

Category: Fiction / Mystery
164 pages; ISBN: 0646418432

Mystery writer Edmund Crispin once wrote of Christie: “…relaxing with a Christie [novel], for an hour or two you can forget the authentic nastiness of life and submerge yourself in a world where, no matter how many murders take place, you are essentially in never-never land.” Writing this review after the events of September 11, 2001, one must think it will take more than a mystery novel to forget nastiness of that magnitude. Indeed, it has been a slow return to my normal schedule following President Bush’s request that the nation return to work, but I do understand his logic. While we should continue to support the NYC and DC rescue and rebuilding efforts in our own ways, we should also take care of ourselves in this time, and return to some degree of normalcy. If we don’t, then the terrorists have truly won, and we cannot allow that.

That said, my normal schedule consists of my job, my writing, and my reading, most of which sustains the many websites I maintain. Recently I purchased a PDA and downloaded an e-book reader program, and through a stroke of good fortune I found on the Internet a .prc file of Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles, better known as the literary debut of one Hercule Poirot.

It has been said that Christie wrote this book in response to her sister’s complaint that mystery novels of the time were too easy to solve; in Styles our work is clearly cut out for us as one gentleman Hastings joins his friend on a holiday at the home of his friend’s mother, Mrs. Inglethorp, only to become embroiled in the woman’s murder and the ensuing investigation. Poirot, vacationing nearby, sagely interviews the house staff and regards the crime scene is his trademark calculating manner, offering just enough information to keep Hastings and the reader frustrated and yearning to learn the outcome.

Even in her first published work, Christie’s writing is polished and the story entertaining and suspenseful. Even in the quietest settings she was able to invoke a sense of suspicion and discomfort, a talent that easily earned Christie the title of queen of the cozy mystery.

Each and every day, British people throw away more than a million pots of unopened yoghurt. Why?

User-friendly Interface
It would be useless to obtain a sophisticated piece of software that claims all good functionality but you would not be able to use it. You really have to ensure that the management membership site software you purchase will not disappoint you and will truly serve to make things easier for you. A user-friendly interface will enable you to master the software more easily and you will be able to give less time for learning it and more time to actually using it for your purposes.

Usability
The software you buy for your membership site must be something that you can use conveniently. It must be easy to install, fast in loading and not intricate or prone to hang when you are using it simultaneously with other programs you use in your computer. You must also check the system requirements of the software to ensure that you get attain supreme functionality of your software and it is very much compatible with whatever you are using it with.

Affordability
How much does it cost? Is it under your budget? You must be able to weigh your options carefully. This will require you to really scour the market for this software and choose the best based on your needs and your available budget for this software. If you find something beyond your initial budget allotment but see that it is worth all that excess money, make the adjustments.

Company Credibility
Before buying anything, you must also check if the provider of the software is reliable in this field. You will be ensured of better service if there are more satisfied customers from the company you are buying your management software from. There are some companies which give more advanced features at a lower price, but if they are relatively new to the business and not yet established in this field, you may want to give a second though before buying from them.

Warranty and Effective Customer Service
Warranties of return if you get dissatisfied with the performance of the software, as well as the ready customer service available should you encounter glitches that require troubleshooting are essential and you must never take these for granted. The presence of a warranty ensures that the company is confident that you will be satisfied with their product and that they are willing to return your money if your expectations are not met. Companies with a no return, no exchange policy are much more riskier and may prove to be fatal if they are unreliable with their products.

Free Trials, if applicable
Free trial of the software will give you a feel for the product and allow you to gauge if it is really worth your money and time. Have as much free trials from different bands as you possibly can before making the decision of what brand to purchase. Check also once you try the software if they fit the exact descriptions they place when marketing the product.

Customizations of Features that can Suit Your Specific Needs
In line with checking for functionality, it is also very important that you can customize the software functions to suit your particular needs. Extra features will be useless if you will not find any concrete use for them. It is better to have a low end customizable software than have a high end one but not be able to truly use the benefits which require the extra dollar payments.

Genes ‘up Indians’ obesity risk’

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Scientists pinpoint a reason why people with Indian ancestry may be more prone to weight problems.

Artists create art to communicate ideas, thoughts, or feelings. They use a variety of methods - painting, sculpting, or illustration - and an assortment of materials, including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, pencils, pen and ink, plaster, clay, and computers. Artists’ works may be realistic, stylized, or abstract and may depict objects, people, nature, or events.

Earning a living as an artist is a dream job for many people because they get to spend their days being creative. Also, a large number of artists are self-employed. This makes the profession even more appealing, and competition for both salaried and freelance work is tough. Art students have a large spectrum of options in front of them, ranging from working in art studios, advertising companies, publishing houses, fashion houses etc.

Many artists work in fine- or commercial-art studios located in office buildings, warehouses, or lofts. Others work in private studios in their homes. Some fine artists share studio space, where they also may exhibit their work.

Training:
Artists usually develop their skills through a bachelor’s degree program or other postsecondary training in art or design. Training is preferred for most artist specialties. Many colleges and universities offer programs leading to the bachelor’s or master’s degree in fine arts. Courses usually include core subjects such as English, social science, and natural science, in addition to art history and studio art

Earnings:
Earnings for self-employed artists vary widely; some well-established artists earn more than salaried artists, while others find it difficult to rely solely on income earned from selling art. Median annual earnings of salaried fine artists, including painters, sculptors, and illustrators, were $38,060.

How can CCTV spot suspects by their streetwear logos?

How much do you know about your FICO score chart? I hear you! You have a vague idea that a FICO is some sort of a score has something to do with credit, but you aren’t sure. You are asking yourself “What is a Fico Score chart, and why is it something I need to know about?” If this term leaves you scratching your head in perplexity, read on.

FICO stands for Fair, Issac and Company. A it is the summation of the score from the three major national credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Each bureau keeps a credit file on you, starting back when you got your first credit card, and each bureau has its own method of calculating your score. . When you request a copy of your credit report, you will also receive your score in chart form.

What Is On This Chart?

Several variables are listed in the chart, and the credit bureaus give each its own numerical score. A rather precise and complex mathematical model is used to calculate your credit score from this information, some of which is listed below -

  • Amount that you owe on open credit accounts
  • Whether or not you have been delinquent on any accounts
  • The total number of bank cards and credit cards that you have
  • How many credit accounts you may have that carry a balance owed
  • How many credit accounts you may have that are NOT credit card accounts, but with banks or finance companies
  • Your account payment history and how long it has been established
  • How many inquiries your credit file has had by other creditors in the last 12 months
  • If the total balance owed is close to the total monetary limit on ALL your credit cards.
  • How long a period of time your credit has been established
  • How often you actually use your credit accounts
  • Whether or not any of your accounts have ever been turned over to a collection agency.
  • How close together you have either opened credit accounts, or have has inquiries made on them.
  • Whether or not you have any cards/accounts that have a zero balance.

When you get your own FICO score from your credit report, you might wonder how your score stacks up with the scores of other people in the United States.

  • 13 percent of the population has a credit score between 800 and 850.
  • 27 percent of the population has a credit score between 750 and 799
  • 18 percent of the population has a credit score between 700 and 749
  • 15 percent of the population has a credit score between 650 and 699
  • 12 percent of the population has a credit score between 600 and 649
  • 8 percent of the population has a credit score between 550 and 599
  • 5 percent of the population has a credit score between 500 and 549
  • 2 percent of the population has a credit score between 300 and 499

Your FICO score chart is the key to your credit rating, and as such, should be guarded carefully. Taking control of your score is the key to your financial future.

Not sure what your credit card rating is? No problem, find out can help you clean up your finances.
