‘Lump sum expense plan’ for MPs

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

MPs could award themselves an automatic lump sum of £23,000 a year to pay for second homes, it is reported.

When visiting the Mayan Riviera, there are a variety of attractions to please just about anybody. Whether you like to party all night and get up in the afternoon, or spend the day sightseeing and go to bed early, you will find fun here. Here are some examples of things to do, to make your vacation enjoyable and complete.

Aqua Tours Day Cruises

This company offers great day trips to the nearby island of Isla Mujeres, or “Island of Women.” Just sign up for a cruise on one of their multi-million dollar yachts and they will take you to the island, drop you off for lunch and to sightsee at different locations then bring you back, all in one day. During the trip, there is open bar, sometimes contests or shows, too. On the island, go snorkeling, see a sea turtle farm called Tortugranja, or visit Hacienda Mundaca (supposedly the ruins of a pirate’s home,) for example.

XCaret - a large park built into the Mexican jungle

This park is a nature and history lover’s dream. Here, you can see native plants and animals, ride horses on the beach, swim with dolphins, go to the theater and see various historical shows or even go to a huge butterfly garden enclosure. There is an underground cave to swim through, which is wonderful for those sizzling hot daily temperatures. Bring a vat of sunscreen with you, believe me, it’s a good idea. Also, there are many restaurants on the premises, from snacks to full-course meals. It is a beautiful and well-maintained park designed to teach about Mexican history and nature.

Chichen Itza

This is a large archeological site with a very impressive pyramid (El Castillo) in the once prominent city controlled by Mayan and Toltec Indians. Sign up to go on a tour through your hotel or resort, with trusted companies like Apple Tours or others. Don’t just hire any guide who comes up to you because, having lived in Mexico for two years, I was told that freelance “tour guides” just make things up and then pocket your money. Get a good guide, and see everything from the ball court, El Castillo, the Nunnery and other famous buildings on this large site. Charters frequently have a lunch for you at the neighboring hotel, a lovely place with kind staff and entertainment as you eat. If you have a chance to go inside the pyramid, do it. I’ve been in there, and though it’s claustrophobic inside, the stairs lead up to a Jade jaguar sculpture and a reclining figure used for ceremonies (Chac Mool.) This is real and well-preserved ancient history. You can even see hieroglyphics on some of the buildings.

Cozumel

From Cancun or Playa del Carmen, board a ferry over to the island of Cozumel. There, you can go to see Chankanaab Park, if you like scuba diving, snorkeling and nature walks. Or, shop for souvenirs at the many stores downtown. There are minor Mayan ruins on the island, too. Stop and eat at the many atmospheric restaurants, or take a buggy ride.

Playa del Carmen

This former fishing village is now a hotspot for many Europeans and has a different feel to it than Cancun. It is a bit more laid back, but definitely not boring, by all means. Walk Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) and shop or stop for a meal. Spend time on the beautiful, white sand beaches up and down the coast. If you want to snorkel or scuba, there are many dive shops that will gladly take you to prime coral gardens. There is an aviary in the Playacar section of Playa, where you can see a variety of beautiful native birds in their own habitat. The golf club at Playacar is impressive and top-class for anyone who loves to golf.

Cancun

If you’re into night clubs, there are a whole lot of them to choose from in the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera.) Try Senor Frogs, Daddy-O, Christine, or Carlos n’ Charlies. These aren’t your average, small potatoes clubs, but world-class ones, with exotic light shows, drinks and fun for everyone who loves to party. Taxis are plentiful, so don’t worry about getting back to the hotel when you’re ready to go back early in the morning. Guaranteed, you won’t be bored in Cancun.

Shoppers will love Cancun’s Hotel Zone, too. Plaza Caracol or Plaza Flamingo are two good places to see, or go to the Mexican market (mercado) and dicker with the locals for native Mexican handicrafts. Exchange your money at the hotel or at Casas de Cambio but not at the market. Someone short-changed me there when I changed my money, hoping I wouldn’t notice, so it’s better to do it somewhere else. Expect to pay less than the marked prices, the vendors expect you to dicker with them.

Enjoy your trip, and pick up maps when there, to see what else is going on that isn’t advertised in the travel brochures. Explore downtown Cancun, too, just outside the Hotel Zone. Be safety conscious, and make sure to tip the wait staff. Mexico is a wonderful country with so much to do and see. If you go once, you’ll be hooked for sure.

Blair was chased over unpaid bill

Monday, May 26th, 2008

An unpaid water bill received by Cherie and Tony Blair is among expenses documents released by the Commons.

If you prefer not to commute to work every morning and like to have a quiet atmosphere as you work, then working as a home agent may be for you. There are many types of jobs available at different companies, such as customer service, data entry or sales. For the sake of this article I will discuss inbound sales calls, since this is my area of expertise. I am one of the top salespeople in my very large, well-known company. This type of position isn’t for everyone, so I’ll explain how many of these positions work.

You are by yourself the whole day, with no coworkers around you. If you do have contact with coworkers, they usually reach you by Instant Message, as does your Supervisor. Being alone all day isn’t for everyone. Be true to what kind of person you are when considering this job, are you an introvert (like to be alone) or an extrovert (like the company of others)? If you are gregarious, and like to have the comraderie of people talking nearby as you work, then you may not like being alone so much. As a home agent, most likely there won’t be a holiday party to go to, since you and your coworkers are spread all over the place. If you are an independent person then this won’t bother you at all. It’s refreshing not to have to talk on the phone over a noisy background. I like my privacy and go out after my job is done for the day, that way I don’t feel isolated.

Having an environment conducive to work is important. If you want to be taken seriously by your superiors and customers, you must have total quiet in the background as much as possible, as you work. If you have noisy pets or kids, then have an office to work in where you can close yourself away from them for awhile. Have someone watch the kids for you as you work so they won’t want to come visit as you talk to customers. This is important because you are being monitored by higher ups by phone and/or computer, and if you have to stop working to deal with other things, then your productivity will be low. This won’t keep you employed for long. So, it pays to be disciplined about your work time and keep all noise and distraction to the absolute minimum.

Most of the time, you must have high speed or cable internet. No dial up, as it is too slow for business purposes. Also, a corded, land-line telephone with a hands-free headset is preferred over cordless phones for security reasons. Especially if you are taking peoples’ credit card information like I do. You don’t want anyone listening in on your conversation who isn’t authorized to. Customers are touchy giving out private information so you want to make their experience as risk-free as possible.

It is important to have discipline and a strong work ethic, in order to keep an independent job. Nobody is there to help you so you must be able to rely on yourself for answering customer questions and problems. Sometimes you can Instant Message a supervisor for help, but this is not always the case. If you can work on your own and rely on your own knowledge, home agent jobs are probably a good fit for your lifestyle. Take all training possible for the position you plan to work in. Most companies have their own training programs so take notes, even if you are experienced in the business. There is always something to be gained from on-the-job training.

Be comfortable when working, but not too comfortable. It’s hard to stay alert when lying down and relaxing in bed or in a recliner. I know, I tried it. My normally consistent high sales stats plummeted during my few weeks in a massage recliner. I was too comfortable. Darn. Back to an office chair, and my sales went back to normal. To keep your initiative going, pretend you’re working in-house and sit at a desk. When you feel professional, you come across as more professional.

There are a variety of jobs available for home agents, so look online. Search for inbound calls or customer service. Anyone who wants you to pay a fee to work for them, forget it and move on. Most companies usally interview you online and on the phone. Make sure when talking to them that you use good diction and voice tone, as they will be analyzing how well you speak. They want a professional representative for their company, so beat out the competition by giving them good phone. When you find the right job, keep that motivation going by remembering the times you were stuck in traffic going to and from your old job. And, how when you’re car broke down, you had to miss work. Once you settle into a daily routine as a home agent, chances are it’ll be a welcome relief from the cubicle lifestyle. Give it a try and see what you think. Good luck and have fun.

Five signs of the storm ahead

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Fancy shoes, dry-cleaning, nice wine - is demand for these a reliable barometer of an approaching recession?

People are finding that time for leisure and favorite pastimes is very limited due to busy schedules. Time for “R&R” seems to need to be scheduled far in advance, since time off ends up being eaten up with chores at home that must be done or just trying to have some quality family time. Many people have given up on favorite activities such as reading, but this no longer needs to be the case.

Before your next trip weather it is by car or plane think about taking along an audio book. Audio books are books that are recorded, sometimes by a famous actor, so that you can listen to new or old favorite books while driving, or just resting your eyes. Audio books are available for rent or purchase.

Many audio books are narrated by famous narrators, or notable celebrities, writers and popular actors. The best audio books are narrated by professional narrators who use their talent to emphasize points with inflection, making the experience for the listener that much more engrossing. Many listeners of audio books discover a favorite narrator, and regularly download those audio books read by their favorite narrator.

Nearly every kind of book you might want is available in the millions of titles, including most new titles that are currently popular and often discussed. You can also find and read a classic you have always wanted to read as well. In addition to classic works, you can find fiction or non-fiction, historical works, motivational texts or nearly any genre you would want to find. Families can find titles that everyone can enjoy, and these would be especially suited to listening while driving to and from a vacation destination.

It is now possible to download MP3 audio books from the internet. The audio books can be played on most any MP3 player, so there is no need to buy extra equipment. Companies offer audio books both for sale or for rent. The rented material expires after a set amount of time; however, there is an option to renew the material if so desired.

Most people don’t remember a time when they had the leisure time available to read a book.

People who love to read but whose time is limited may turn to audio book download to answer both issues. The best audio books are now usually available online and the mp3 audiobooks format means a person needs only their usual MP3 compatible equipment to enjoy them. Every genre of books imaginable is available for purchase or temporary rentals and the download process is simple enough for anyone to do it. Audio format books can be enjoyed while traveling or driving or otherwise multitasking, making it easy to still read even in these terribly busy and rushed times. Listening to audio format books can relieve stress.

‘Asbestos warning’ on nanotubes

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Carbon nanotubes could trigger diseases similar to those caused by asbestos, a study suggests.

To get the loudest and best sound quality from your car’s stereo system, you will need to add an amplifier to the system. As good as after market head units are, they just don’t produce enough power to give you great sound at higher volumes. Here are some tips for adding an amplifier to your car stereo system.

Amplifiers can take the signals from your head unit and give you a much more powerful, cleaner signal to power your cars speakers. When adding am amplifier, it is important to know your speakers limitations. Most factory speakers won’t do well with an amplified signal, so you will want to upgrade these as well in a lot of cases. Look for the ratings of continuous power or RMS ratings. These ratings will give you the best indication of how much power the speakers can hold. Match this rating to the amplifier rating to ensure you are getting everything out of the system, and that you will have a system that will be durable and last.

The signals the speakers receive should also be taken into account. Larger subwoofers need the frequencies on the lower end to produce the bass tones, but you wan to be sure to exclude frequencies that are above, and below, the recommended range. Too low and you risk damaging the speaker, and too high can cause some undesirable results sound wise. Most amps are quipped with a subsonic (too low of a frequency) filter to avoid the low frequencies. They also have a crossover that will eliminate the higher frequencies as well. These two components allow the speaker to get the frequencies it needs for optimum performance.

Smaller speakers should also be set up to get the frequencies they need. If amplified, these speakers almost always should have a crossover attached to ensure that big bass tones won’t damage the speakers designed for midrange response and high frequencies. Dividing the sound into low, middle and high frequencies using the different types of speakers creates a medley of tuned sound that gives the experience we want from our systems.

Pay attention to ohms and power ratings, and be sure to match all accordingly. Combining multiple speakers on one channel always affects the ohm rating of the system, and can be detrimental if the system is not designed for it. Subwoofer amplifiers tend to be more forgiving due to their low impedance (ohms) ratings and flexibility. Remember, it is the combination of power and precision that make the system sound the best.

Laser heats up the fusion future

Vulcan, the world’s most powerful laser, heats matter to a truly sweltering 10 million Celsius.

When you take into account the fact that an overwhelming 90% of sales on the internet are made directly after the use of a search engine, it is easy to see why search engines have become such a strong interest for advertisers and anyone who wants to bring interested clients to their websites. The thing that you need to be aware of is that search engines like the ones used at Google and Yahoo are very sophisticated devices that play by a set of complex rules. These rules tell them what sites best match the criteria provided by the searcher, and you’ll find that if your site is the one that is at the top of the search list, you’ll see a lot more hits than otherwise. Many people, however, have difficulty figuring out what can bring them to the top of the list, and this is where a search engine optimisation company can step in and save the day!

Search engine optimisation, which is also abbreviated to SEO, is the process of making your website attractive to search engines. It is essentially taking the steps that you need to take to make sure that the people who are looking for the services you provide will be able to find you, and contrary to what many people think, it is actually a great deal more complex than simply putting the right words on your website. Not so terribly long ago, you could get to the top of the Google search list by putting up long lists of keywords, but the search engines themselves are now much more powerful and sophisticated and will not be fooled by this trick.

SEO companies have a very thorough understanding of how search engines work, and because of this, they can help your company get to the top of the search engine’s result list. You’ll find that if you aren’t on the first page, there is a good chance that your business will suffer, and this is exactly what an SEO company will give you. You’ll find that a good SEO company will have a great deal of versatility in what it is they cover. Not only will they help you with your website content, they will also show you how keywords can bring the perfect demographic to your website and how the wrong ones can bring you a lot of irrelevant traffic!

Good SEO companies will also help you when it comes to link building. One of the things that the search engines will look for when they are ranking their search results is how popular the site is, and this will depend on how many sites link you without linking back. The first point that many people consider when they think about linking is that they need to have site that is referenced by blogs or media sites, but a company well-versed in SEO practices will show you that you can use article databases and listings on industry-specific referral sites to bulk your link building as well.

There is no way to ignore the importance of search engines when it comes to doing business today, so take a look to see how they can work for you, instead of against you, by enlisting the aid of a search engine optimisation company!

The maths of Eurovision voting

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Despite its catchy entry, the UK is handicapped in the song contest, say boffins who study bloc voting patterns.

If you’ve been feeling like Tom Cruise climbing up the side of some remote jagged mountain in the blazing hot sun and concerned you’re facing “mission impossible”, chances are you own a web site.

Adding to the intense thrill of web site ownership are keyword comparisons and bidding for good keyword positions in search engines. You might hire a search engine optimization specialist who can track elusive algorithm clues and is unfazed by page rank drama. Your programmers and designers insist they get along. The marketing department actually believes deadlines are met. The new bank account is waiting for fresh revenue. And oh yes, it’s assumed someone will come looking for your web site and wants to use it.

You did build it for them, right?

For every search result, there is the possibility that:

a. The engine will display a description that makes sense. Or not.

b. The page the search engine refers to does what the description said it would do and is about what the search engine said it would cover. Or not.

Your SEO/SEM, if you hired a good one, helped you write your title tag statement and Meta page description and structured it so it makes sense in SERPs (search engine results pages).

Your Usability professional, if you hired one, evaluated the page to make sure it would meet customer expectations and convince visitors there are other hot pages inside the web site to look at too. Without call to action prompts, well displayed, logically labeled navigation links and credible content, the chance of someone remaining on that page is pretty slim.

Says Gordon Hotchkiss, President and CEO of Enquiro Search Solutions, Inc., in a recent Search Day article written by Shari Thurow, called Creating Compelling Search Engine Ads and Landing Pages, “Once searchers arrive on your landing pages, you have 13.2 seconds to convince visitors that they are on the right site.”

Impossible Mission?

Had enough of web page abandonment? Are those cost per click fees putting you further in credit card debt and not producing any bang for your buck? Which part of “understand your web site visitor” didn’t make it to the drawing board?

I know this is hard. You’re not a mind reader. Unless you have access to costly studies and data about who to build your web site for and their computer usage habits, chances are you simply wanted a web site and hoped people would find it and use it. By incorporating the skills and expertise of an SEO/SEM along with a user centered design specialist, you will not be wastefully tossing your web site off the search engine cliff. Rather, your adoring fans will clamor up the cliff to get to it.

Sometimes a web designer is also trained in these fields or is partnered with people who are. This is something to consider when shopping around for web site assistance.

Here are some things to keep in mind when studying your web site. You can also ask your team to consider these points.

1. What happens after your site reaches top rank? It’s lonely up there, if nobody notices your page or understands the page description. How effective is high rank? Do people really click on “sponsored” pages vs. natural results?

2. Pay attention to inside “landing” pages. Optimize them for easy indexing and point visitors to your homepage, sale products or free stuff.

3. Be wise about what you invest. Every cost per click must be productive. If not, a usability web site review can locate roadblocks.

4. It’s about the user experience. Really. It’s a common habit for web site owners to create the site for themselves based on what they like and want. When you receive a complaint, consider it a favor. Yes, some people are mean and critical. But, enhancements are improvements that sometimes benefit a lot of people, and you too, in the long run.

5. Don’t settle for minimum effort. One of your goals is to reach potential customers and readers. Your optimized pages reach people looking for them. Your user centered pages reach people wanting to use them and will refer them to friends.

6. Your competition does it better. Not by packing hidden keywords and buying links, but by carefully targeting keywords, providing cleverly written content and delivering user centered design.

7. Think sustainability. If you plan on your web site being around for a while, make this a checkpoint for every future decision related to your site. If someone has an idea that won’t impact the long-term sustainability of the site, the site may disappear out of sheer user boredom. And search do engines notice.

8. Understanding your visitors and customers allows for more creative keyword combinations. Put a feedback form on your web site. Ask them how they found your web site. Ask them what keywords they used. Ask them why they came or what they wanted to find. Ask them if they found what they were looking for and if not, provide room for comments so they can explain what happened. This information is a gold mine for you.

9. Never mislead your visitors. Be accurate with what you say a site or page is about. Search results relevancy establishes trust from the start.

10. The elegance of action. The act of landing on a relevant, accurate, persuasive, interesting page leads to the fluid, unencumbered desire to know more and click deeper. Aim for this.

Do not drop your web site over the search engine cliff without considering the usability effect. Design it to be productive and user centered. This will pay off in many ways. Remember your original requirements and goals and trace back every dollar you spend to meeting them. Marketing efforts are strengthened when you make your visitors feel welcome, informed and productive once they arrive at your web site.

Simpson ‘marries musician Wentz’

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Singer Ashlee Simpson marries Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, according to a report in People magazine.

Today I’m going to give you my opinion on Brad Callens Keyword Elite software. I was asked to express my judgmental opinion on it so others can feel either comfortable purchasing or simply frightened away. So let’s begin.

Let’s start out with a little introduction as to what exactly is Keyword Elite. KE is a keyword research tool that helps webmasters determine profitable keywords for whichever niche they intend to market or use an arbitrage method. Yeah I know there are a lot of you reading this post that are thinking to themselves well why would I buy something that I can get for free. And by free I’m referring to google’s keyword sandbox, and overture’s keyword selector. Stuff like that.

Well here’s my conservative opinion. You can spend hours going through google sandbox and overture trying to find profitable niche markets and still not come up with anything that will produce a profit. I know this from experience.

I myself am an owner of KE since last year when I decided I was tired of killing myself. Yeah know like most of your reading this I was working a full-time job only to come home and work on my internet job. Yeah I got tired of the rat race also.

So KE works like this. You’ll enter a broad term like “Money Online” and select some search criteria options like number of competitors, number of clicks a month, traffic volume, etc.. and it will produce a list of keywords anywhere from 1000 - infinite. It will even allow you to see what you’re likely to pay for PPC campaigns for those keywords. Again you can limit your selection and filter it based on a number of operators.

After your list is generated you have endless possibilities of what you can do with it. You can take that and use it in your adwords campaign, narrow some keywords down for adsense profits, or research arbitrage keywords. The potential is left in your hands.

Every person that is successful online has their own keyword research software, it’s simply the way to grow. I myself cannot do justice in a simple review that KE’s video example can. Go check out the video for yourself.

‘Worst poet’ outsells boy wizard

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Poems by “the world’s worst poet” bring in more than signed first editions of Harry Potter at auction.

I got a call at 6:30 am this morning ( OUCH ) from a young 20 year old woman got scammed with canwestcredit.com. She was at work and couldn’t spend alot of time reading our site which is full of information on these Bad credit loan scams.

This painted a scenario for somebody who would apply for a bad credit loan.

If you’ve got bad credit and recently have applied for a loan with Royal Bank, TD Canada Trust, Bank of Montreal, ScotiaBank, Bank of Commerce, and have been denied, then you need to take heed to that.

There are other lenders that may help you out such as HouseHold Finance, which is a HIGH RISK lender.

The point is, if you’re desperate for a loan, you’re probably going to shop at places on the internet that indicate that they can help people with bad credit.

The scammers are telling unsuspecting people that they can help give them a “bad credit loan”. This is obviously appealing to those who are desperate for money.

FIRST POINT TO KNOW:
It’s illegal for a loan company to ask for a fee or down payment up front in order to give you a loan. This is the first alarm bell.

If a bad loan credit officer asks you to wire them money via moneygram, or western union, your money will most likely disappear!!

SECOND POINT TO KNOW:
If you’re not familiar with the bad credit lender, then they may not be legitimate. If you’re seriously thinking of dealing with this company, you need to keep in mind that lenders and mortgage brokers must be licensed to do business in your province. You can call Consumer Protection-Corporations branch to see if this bad credit loan company is registered with the Provincial or Federal governments. ( Banks are registered Federally in Canada )

THIRD POINT TO KNOW
Just because a bad credit loan company has a phone number, doesn’t mean that they’re in Canada.. A phonebusters.com representative that I interviewed suggested that with the tools on the internet, scammers can get a phone Canadian phone number and have it forwarded to Hong Kong or some other far away place. This means that the predators might be living in a far off land while you think they’re in Canada.

FOURTH POINT TO KNOW - IDENTIFY THEFT
NEVER NEVER NEVER give out personal information such as social insurance number, date of birth, address to people or companies you don’t know. In this case, these bad credit loan scammers are more than likely going to steal your personal information and use it to buy products using your name. You’ll get the bill for these stolen products and get stuck with hours and hours of explaining to do with the suppliers that are being stolen from.

BAD CREDIT LOANS ON THE INTERNET ARE DANGEROUS
Here’s my advice… Even if you’re desperate for money, you need to take a few hours to research potential companies you’re going to use to borrow money from. They need to be registered, familiar, and credible.

If you DON’T take the time to research bad credit loan companies in Canada, you’re going to lose your money. It’s a hard lesson. It’s a hard reality. It’s the truth.

Don’t let bad credit loan scammers get away with murder. Do your homework before you borrow money!

US lists polar bear as threatened

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

The US lists the polar bear as a threatened species but says the decision will not affect climate change policies.

Pakistan, like many countries worldwide, is booming in the property sector. The prices are only escalating. Investors are targeting places like Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Islamabad for property due to the prices valuing at million US$. In fact, a house like Gulberg with just one kanal is sold for US$200,000, with an increase by $300,000 for a two-kanal house, and the like. The property prices, compared to what they were 5 years back, have more than tripled. People are holding the properties for the price to move up even higher in future. But will the price balloon puncture in the near future?

Many people are entering into the market with buying properties. Investments are being made in projects that would take a few years for development. On the city outskirts, many housing complexes are forthcoming; the houses valued in lakhs. Still, people are not interested in selling them off. This is because is a selling pressure is seen, the prices will deflate and there will be a sharp correction in property prices. Instead, people are opting for loans to enter the property market, but since the interest rates on these loans are high, and people are holding, and not selling the properties, there have been many cases of defaults. This is a major concern.

For buying a hew house, you need to make many decisions. Loan is the biggest decision here. Most people cannot finance a new house upfront so they invariably rely on loans from various financial institutions. The officer in charge of the loan will require you to bring various supporting documents to ensure that you have the ability to pay back the loan amount. A credit check is always done before extending a loan.

This credit check is a credit report that enabled the lender to have an idea of how well or otherwise you have been performing when it comes to clearing your debts in time. If there had been some general reason for the inability to pay the past loans, like leaving a job or falling sick, some companies do help you get your credit report back on the normal terms, and they extend you the loan. The approvals of loans take quite some time.

Most banks and other financial institutions ensure that you are able to render the loan repayment to them when the time comes. The loan officers will explain in details regarding some unfamiliar things that you might come across. In case of a mortgage, the contract is a long-term one between you and the lender, usually a bank, and the repayment must take place in an agreed period of time. In this case, the bank can exercise their right to take away the home from you if you are unable to pay back the loan. They can’t ask you to follow instructions set by them to maintain the house, but can claim the house as theirs incase of default. So this is an obligation between you and the bank that you will render the loan repayment well in time. The loan officers are always willing to do their bit to make sure that you get the best deal in business.

A blown head gasket can be a costly repair any way you look at it, but there are some ways to make sure you get the most value out of your repair. The first thing to do is to make sure the diagnosis is correct. Then, find a reputable dealership or repair shop to handle the repair, preferably one that has a lot of experience in engine rebuilds and head gasket repair. Then, with the tips following, be sure to ask a few key questions to make sure the repair is done correctly.

The diagnosis can be a little tricky depending on how bad the head gasket is. If it is beginning to fail, the signs will be moderate, and will typically be a slight overheating, or a small amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. If the gasket is completely gone, it will be obvious due to the rough idle, or it wont run at all. If it does run, there will be a large amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. If the head gasket blows while driving, the biggest thing to watch out for is the temperature. Higher temps can quickly damage an engine by causing warping of the heads or the block, or even cracking. The sooner the engine is stopped after realizing the head gasket is blown, the better the chances of rebuilding the top end without major consequences.

The person or shop that performs the rebuild should know to check for warping of the block surface, the head surface, and to check for cracks in the head. These checks may cost a little more, but the consequences can be much more costly in the end if they are not checked. If the block is slightly warped, do ahead and have it flattened; if the head needs to be repaired, it can be decked to get the surface straight again. If the head is cracked, it will probably need to be replaced, but some have had success welding and repairing them. It depends on the location of the crack.

Once the parts are cleaned and/or repaired, its time to have it assembled. Most shops will know to torque the heads down to specs, and to use all new studs on the head. This helps make sure that the head is fastened on securely. Using the old studs can create a situation where the head is not properly torqued because the studs will stretch when they are torques. Old stud have already been stretched, so the torque value will be different than a new stud. You can see the difference in the treads if you hold the two studs up together.

These are a few things to look out for when having a head gasket repaired. You can look to spend between 1200 and 2000 depending on how much work needs to be done. Don’t make the mistake in paying a discounted price for less experienced work. The results will cost you.
